"Go sleep *hic* it off...you look a little *hic* rough!"
Tipsy Troop, Death Screen

The Tipsy Troop is a group of three drunk alcohol beverages that appear on the boss fight with King Dice when landing on Space 1. Their names are Ol' Ethan, Ginette and Rumulus

Description[]

Appearance[]

The Tipsy Troop is a trio of three different glasses. Ol' Ethan is a rum glass with a red nose, a brown mustache and large eyebrows. Ginette is a martini glass with purple eyelashes and eyeshadow, with magenta lipstick. Rumulus is a whiskey bottle with a large nose, red eyes and has a gap between two of his teeth. All three members of the Tipsy Troop have bags under their eyes and move sluggishly, representing intoxication.

Personality[]

Ginette is surly, Rumulus is short-tempered, and Ol' Ethan is a bumbler.[1] They seem prone to hiccups, as evidenced by their death screen, and that they wobble drunkenly, which is a visual pun on the effects of drinking excessive amounts of alcohol.

Intro[]

The Tipsy Troop don't do anything special in their intro, they just do their idle animations at the start of the battle. However, what appears to be a pouring noise is briefly heard right before the announcer speaks. However, once the fight actually begins, the empty tables in the background will then be filled with customers, which will disappear and appear over time.

There is an unused animation where the trio appears as regular alcohol beverages (Rumulus a whiskey bottle, Ginette a martini glass, and Ol' Ethan a rum glass and then they are animated).

Battle[]

All three have their own singular attack and they simultaneously attack the player. Their attacks are:

  • Ol' Ethan leans backward, then falls forward, spilling his contents, which covers the entire ground, forcing the player to jump.
  • Ginette sends Olive Bat out. It shoots its eyeball at the player. Some of the eyeballs can be parried. She can only summon three olive bats at the same time and they can be defeated. Hitpoints = 8/8
  • Rumulus opens his lid and erupts the rum fluid inside him into the air, causing it to rain down on the player.

They are considered separate enemies and must be defeated one by one. Hitpoints = 215/265

When they are defeated, Ol' Ethan and Rumulus sit on the ground, Ginette nods her head. They all spilled some of their liquor on the ground. Total hitpoints = 645/795

Trivia[]

  • The Tipsy Troop may represent the drinking game which is often played in barrooms, pubs, or occasionally casinos. The drinking game is played by two people to see how many drinks each of them can handle before one or the other passes out from intoxication.
  • In the animation sprite, it is shown that the Tipsy Troop does have an intro animation: they start off as inanimate beverage glasses, then their features on them show up and start moving; the reason for their intro animation not being used in the game is unclear.
  • In the unused Simple Mode, they would never attack and have extremely little health. In later versions like 1.1.3, the Simple Mode differences have been removed and would play like Regular Mode instead.
  • Prior to update 1.1.3, the olive bats could only shoot red eyeballs and they all could be parried.
  • Originally nameless, in The Art Of Cuphead The Tipsy Troop were given official names.
    • Rumulus is a play on Romulus and rum.
    • Ol' Ethan is a play on ethanol.
    • Ginette is a play on gin.
  • Their glass and beverage are slightly transparent.
  • In the art background of the boss fight across the lounge, there appears to be a lot of people wandering and sitting on tables, such as a Skeleton with hair and a top hat, and a blue-devil-like humanoid looking at a Woman holding her head on the table, as well as a Walrus-like humanoid creature, a skeleton-horse humanoid that resembles Phear Lap, a red demon imp on the side, a satan-like humanoid that resembles The Devil with an old lady and a wolf-like humanoid, farther away appears to be a ghost, and a humanoid demon with large bat-like wings that resembles Chernabog from Fantasia, with a skeleton-like man in a tuxtedo.
  • Unlike Ginette and Ol’Ethan, Rumulus doesn’t make a sound when he is knocked out.

Inspirations and similarities[]

  • Ginette has a resemblance to bbit from Who Framed Roger Rabbit.
  • The appearance of Ol' Ethan may be based on that of Yosemite Sam, an ornery western outlaw from the Warner Bros. cartoons; he also resembles the Rum Cakes from The Cookie Carnival.
  • Tipsy Troop's line containing hiccups is a reference to how cartoon characters have a tendency to hiccup after drinking alcoholic substances.
